Here We Go…
As the title suggests, soccer starts now! And I have the privilege of coaching my second grader again this year! I was the reluctant assistant coach last year and I just loved it! I’ve never in my life played organized soccer so I had to catch up on the rules before even starting. (Seriously, can we talk about offside? Why is it offside and not offsides like normal football? (Kidding) Who even knows. And what’s up with it moving up and down the field depending on where the defenders are located? Anyway. I digress.)
In preparing for this coming season as the head coach; I have taken a deep dive into learning all things related to coaching youth soccer. I read up on all the rules. Then came a ton of YouTube videos on all aspects of how to coach youth sports in general, and soccer specifically. And also, tons of YouTube videos on youth and beginner soccer drills and practice strategies. I also watch way too much college and professional soccer. From that, I have gained a wealth of knowledge related to all things soccer. Compared to someone who knows anything about soccer, I am sure I am clearly very amateur. But I now know enough to couch my team at least moderately well. I have also practiced in the yard so that I don’t go out there lookin’ a fool trying to kick a ball! I know I am not the only one… Anyway, all that to say…
My Go-To Resource
If you find yourself coaching youth soccer or any sport really, I seriously recommend YouGotMojo vdeos on YouTube. They have videos on soccer, baseball, softball, and some others. I have only watched their soccer videos and they are extremely helpful. Considering the number of videos they have, it’s quite likely that you’ll find enough drills that are perfectly suited for your team, you’ll be able to fill every practice this season from just this channel.
This video on U8 soccer drills has some really fun skills training disguised as games for the kids to play. This one on beginner footwork drills has some of the same suggested activities as the first video, but it includes a few other activities as well that I thought were really great, too. I will say, the kids in the videos must be some kind of elite youth soccer players because there are no players on any team in our league that would complete these drills with the same proficiency as the kids in the video. So if you’re going to use this channel for inspiration, don’t expect to see on the field what you do onscreen. Unless, of course, you have a team full of elite-level soccer players!
Conclusion
Any soccer moms out there? What about team moms or coaches? What resources do you use, or have you just played soccer all your life?
Tell me what role you’ve gotten wrangled into for your kids that you never saw yourself doing. Did you love it!?
