What Are You Waiting For?
Hello again, momma! Today I get to talk to you about personal growth and development. This journey is a marathon, not a sprint and you’ll have to give yourself much grace along the way. I understand that it can be difficult to balance caring for your family with caring for yourself, so I have created this list of 10 self-improvement activities and techniques that have worked in my life. So grab a cup of coffee or tea, find a cozy spot, and let’s get started!
1. Mindset Mastery: Cultivating a Growth Mindset
I know. Everyone keeps telling you about mindset, and how it makes or breaks any situation. But, that’s because it’s true! If you want to experience personal growth and be successful, you have to develop a growth mindset. Embrace challenges, learn from your failures and mistakes, and trust that you are more than the things you’ve gotten wrong.
What’s helped me:
Reframe negative thoughts into positive ones. I know, there’s always negative to be found but if that’s true then it follows that there must be positive in every situation as well. Look for the positive and you’ll find it.
Realize that everybody who has ever been good at something was first bad at it. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. Oprah got fired from a news job in her 20s because she was “unfit for television”. Do not let being bad at something stop you from getting good at it. Go ahead and try that thing you’ve been wanting to try. You’ll be glad you did!
Surround yourself with positive influences. They say you become the five people you spend the most time with. Who are you destined to become based on your current circumstances? Put your wellness first; surround yourself with those who make you better and have your best interests at heart.
2. Setting Goals: The Key to Progress
Goal setting is key to achievement. I’ve heard it said that a goal not written down is just a dream. But unrealistic and unspecific goals can be more detrimental to your mental health than no goals at all. That’s where SMART goals come in. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. Regardless of the magnitude of the goal – from learning a new recipe to starting your own business – breaking it down into actionable steps will help you stay motivated and track your progress.
SMART Goals Broken Down
Imagine you want to learn how to make a delicious chocolate cake.
Specific: Your goal should be clear and focused. Instead of saying, “I want to bake a cake,” be more specific, like “I want to learn how to make a yummy chocolate cake from scratch.”
Measurable: Make sure you can track your progress. You can do this by counting the number of times you practice making the cake or rating your success each time you bake it.
Achievable: Set a goal that you can realistically accomplish. If you’ve never baked before, it might not be achievable to become a master baker in a week. Start with something reasonable like “I want to be able to bake a decent chocolate cake in a month.”
Relevant: Your goal should make sense and matter to you. Ask yourself, “Why do I want to learn to bake this cake?” Maybe you love chocolate and want to impress your family and friends with your baking skills.
Time-bound: Set a deadline for when you want to achieve your goal. For example, “I want to learn to bake a yummy chocolate cake in time for my best friend’s birthday party next month.”
So, a SMART goal for learning a new recipe like a chocolate cake could be: “In the next month, I want to learn how to make a delicious chocolate cake from scratch, and I’ll practice baking it at least four times so I can surprise my best friend with it at her birthday party.”
3. Developing Emotional Intelligence: Enhancing Self-Awareness
Emotional intelligence (EI) is vital to your personal growth and in building strong, healthy relationships. Put simply, emotional intelligence is about how well you understand and handle emotions, both in yourself and in other people. Having emotional intelligence helps you have better relationships with people, handle problems more calmly, and make wise decisions. This is a skill that is developed over time so don’t be afraid if you’re bad at it at first! To improve your emotional intelligence, practice self-reflection, actively listen to others, and learn to regulate your emotions effectively.
Key Aspects of EI
Self-awareness: This means knowing how you feel and why you feel that way. It’s like having a map of your own emotions, so you can understand why you might feel happy, sad, angry, or excited at different times.
Self-regulation: Think of it as being the boss of your emotions. It’s about controlling how you react to things, so you don’t let your feelings take over and make you do something you might regret later.
Motivation: This is what drives you to do things and achieve your goals. It’s like having a fire inside you that keeps you going, even when things get tough.
Empathy: It’s like having a “feeling antenna” that helps you understand how others feel. Empathy allows you to put yourself in their shoes and be kind and supportive.
Social skills: These are the tools that help you get along well with others. It includes having a good set of communication skills, being friendly, and knowing how to work as part of a team.
4. Nurturing Relationships: Strengthening Social Connections
As moms, we tend to be good at taking care of our families before (and often instead of) ourselves. While this is commendable, it is still vitally important that we do not lose our own identity. We must maintain social connections outside of our homes because let’s face it, conversations with little humans only do so much for our mental health. Remember, a strong support system can make a world of difference in your personal growth journey.
Ways to Improve Social Connectedness
Attend Playgroups: Join local playgroups or mommy-and-me classes where you can meet other moms and their kids. It’s an excellent way for both you and your child to socialize.
Attend Church or Religious Gatherings: If you are part of a religious community, attending gatherings or events at your place of worship can help you connect with other families. Most churches now have online services; you can sample a few services before attending to ensure their teaching meshes with your beliefs.
Attend Community Events: Check out local events, fairs, or gatherings in your neighborhood or community. These events often provide opportunities to meet new people and make friends.
Volunteer: Consider volunteering at your child’s school or in community organizations. Volunteering is a great way to meet other parents and contribute to your community.
Take Classes or Workshops: Explore local classes or workshops that align with your interests or hobbies. Whether it’s a fitness class, art workshop, or cooking class, it’s an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals.
Reconnect with Old Friends: Reach out to old friends or acquaintances who live nearby and arrange to meet up for a catch-up session.
5. Prioritizing Self-Care: Balancing Your Needs
Ladies, we all know how easy it is to neglect self-care when managing a family. All of us at one point or another have thought “Oh snap, it’s 6 pm, have I eaten today?” or “What’s that smell? Oh, it’s me, I wonder when I last showered…” but this, my friends, is so very unhealthy. We mommas must take care of ourselves or there will eventually be nothing left to give to the family we love so deeply. Whether it’s reading a book, taking a walk, or indulging in a hobby, these moments of self-care will help you recharge and be more present for your family.

6. Harnessing the Power of Positive Thinking: Optimizing Mental Well-Being
Girlfriend, if you take anything from this post, let it be this point: you can change your entire life just by changing your perspective. No, seriously. Positive thinking can have a profoundly positive impact on your mental well-being and personal growth.
Keys to Success
Be Mindful of Your Thoughts: Pay attention to the thoughts that come into your mind throughout the day. Notice if they tend to be negative or positive.
Challenge Negative Thoughts: When you catch yourself thinking negatively, stop for a moment and question those thoughts. Ask yourself if they are really true or if there might be a more positive way to see the situation.
Practice Gratitude: Every day, take a moment to think about the things you are grateful for in your life. It could be something as simple as having a roof over your head or a good meal to eat.
Surround Yourself with Positive People: Spend time with people who have a positive outlook on life. Positivity can be contagious, and being around positive people can lift your spirits.
Focus on Solutions: Instead of dwelling on problems, try to focus on finding solutions. Think about what you can do to improve a situation rather than getting stuck in negativity.
Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. This will boost your confidence and motivation.
7. Lifelong Learning: Expanding Knowledge and Skills
I’ve heard it said that you stop living the day you stop learning and I believe this to be so very true. Everything is always changing so if you’ve stopped moving forward, you’re moving backward. That’s no way to live, momma! You were created for so much more than an unfulfilled life. I know, it can be scary to learn a new thing, and it may take some sacrifice to squeeze in an activity just for you. But I assure you, you’ll be glad you did. Embrace your curiosity and start something new that you have actual interest in. It can be something “productive” or it can be something just for you. Either way, make sure you truly enjoy it.
Ideas for Exploration
Online Courses: Take fun and interactive classes on the internet about things you love or want to know more about. You can learn how to be a better mom, cook new recipes, or even explore interesting topics with these online lessons.
Learn a New Language: Try learning a new language with apps or simple lessons. It’s like discovering how to talk in a different way and can be a fun way to communicate with others.
Arts and Crafts: Enjoy making art or crafty things with your hands. You can draw, paint, knit, or make cool decorations to brighten up your home.
Cooking and Baking: Get creative in the kitchen! Try out new recipes and baking ideas. Cooking is like a tasty experiment, and you can share your delicious results with your family.
Gardening: Have fun growing plants, vegetables, or pretty flowers in your garden. You’ll learn how to take care of them and see nature’s magic at work.
DIY Home Improvement: Fix and upgrade things around your house using easy do-it-yourself techniques. It’s like giving your home a little makeover, and you’ll feel proud of your accomplishments.
Join a Book Club: You can join a group of people who love books, just like you. In this club, you read books together and then talk about them. It’s a great way to make friends and learn new things from the stories you read.
Explore Nature: Take peaceful walks in nature, like through parks or trails. You’ll enjoy the fresh air and get to see plants, animals, and beautiful scenery up close.
8. Physical Fitness: Strengthening the Mind-Body Connection
As a personal trainer, this one is especially close to my heart. I cannot express to you the benefits that come with regular physical activity. In addition to the obvious improvement in physical wellbeing, regular exercise greatly enhances mental health because of the hormones released during and after exercise. Additional benefits include: increased energy levels, better sleep, stress relief, improved flexibility, balance, and posture, reduced back pain, improved self-confidence, better heart health, and a boosted immune system. Clearly, this one change can provide immense benefit to your life.
I’ve written several articles on the topic of exercise. For the full list, click here. Also, check out the article on How to Balance Fitness and Motherhood.
Bringing it All Together
I hope these 8 aspects of self-care help you as much as they’ve helped me. Being a momma is hard work, no matter what anyone may think. Remember that you are still you, not just a mom. You deserve to spend some time and effort on yourself. Also remember personal growth is a continuous process, and it’s never too late to start. Embrace the challenges, set meaningful goals, and prioritize self-care along the way. By cultivating a growth mindset, nurturing relationships, and honing your skills, you’ll unlock your full potential and become the best version of yourself. You’ve got this!
